Ask-a-Techie: Autoplay

Posted by Serges LaRiviere on Wed, Jan 18, 2012

Heya Techie,

Every time I put a CD or DVD into my media player program pops up.  How can I stop this from happening?  I want to be able to select what program opens what file.

Thanks,

Otto-matically Annoyed

Well Otto,

Windows by default has the AutoPlay unction enabled which detects what kind of media has bee inserted and launches the appropriate program to play it.  In Windows Vista and Windows 7 this is a relatively easy fix.

First we need to go to Control Panel -> Autoplay

Once in that menu setup you can select how you want each thing to open.

If you are using Windows XP, the process is normally a bit longer, however Microsoft has a great quick-fix link to disable the AutoPlay feature at the following link.

Thanks for the question!

The Techie
